Well, the results are in, and our team took 2nd place for the Fall 2006 tournament! We shot 58 in lousy weather the first day including one bogey, but then we redeemed ourselves the second day by firing 7-under! We shot a 53 with the help of three -- yes, three -- chip-ins, including a sand wedge by Eric on #5, a sand wedge by Rolfe on #9, and an amazing bumpy, in-your-face Texas Wedge by Dave on #14. We were all ragging on Dave for trying to putt the ball over such a bumpy, irregular surface, but he persisted... the ball started out bouncing all over the place, but then miraculously straightened out, accelerated, and dropped straight into the cup!
So all in all we finished at 111, just one shot back from first place. The next closest team to us was three shots worse, so we owned second place and will make about $125 each for our efforts. It pretty much pays for our golf!
The house we rented in Cobmoosa Shores was fantastic -- perfect for our needs. It had a great shower and bathroom, a nice deck and roomy living room, and even the bedroom situation wasn't too bad, although Rob, Rolfe and I had to share a room with Rob and Eric getting the kiddy-sized beds. I think Rob got the short end of the deal there, since he had stereo snoring to contend with. It didn't really matter that the cottage wasn't on Lake Michigan or Stony Lake, since we thought it was too cold to do any fishing anyway.
Speaking of weather, the weekend actually turned out just fine, despite all the highly inaccurate forecasts we read. Friday morning (Eric, Dave, and John) was gorgeous. Friday evening while playing at Grand View, we had a few drops of rain hit us briefly, but otherwise we stayed dry the entire weekend. It did rain after midnight on Friday night too, but it never affected our play. However, it was pretty cold on Saturday and Sunday, and breezy, as predicted. We were all glad we packed long pants of some sort for golf, since it would have been unbearable in shorts. As for the forecasts, it just proves that you can't count on any forecast in Michigan, and that none of the weather sites really have any advantage over each other as far as accuracy.
We did not play as much golf this year, but not because of the weather: We arrived at our appointed tee time for the Thoroughbred on Saturday, but the course was so jammed with people that there were three groups already waiting to tee off on #1, and the pro said we were looking at a 5 to 6 hour round. So instead, we headed back to the cottage and hung out, watched movies and football, and played euchre. Dave quite obviously proved that he is the lucky charm when it comes to euchre. Although he and Rolfe always beat Rob and I when they were paired together, when we switched up teams so that Rolfe and I were teammates, we were soundly trounced in four straight games. Either Dave is the lucky charm, or I am the euchre curse.
The food was incredible; Dave did a terrific job of coordinating, buying, cooking, and basically fattening us up. We had crab and corn chowder in bread bowls for lunch one day, french toast bake for breakfast, and we also cooked up the 3-pound turkey breast I won in the Spring raffle. We had laughed about winning a turkey breast as a raffle prize in a golf outing, but it was actually fantastic.
